Domain Developers Fund Investors Report – February 2013

The market in 2013
The year starts with many remarkable sales, or at least with remarkable reported sales (an increasing number of sales are now under NDA). First estate.com, a domain financed by DDF was sold for 165.000 USD. Other remarkable sales have been: Booker.com: 375.000 USD, Mojo.com: 300.000 USD, Apuestas.com (“best” in Spanish) at 220.000 USD, Mobile.xxx: 160.000 USD, Partners.com: 125.000 USD, Torrents.com: 112.000 USD, Banque.com: 91.000 USD, Ulive.com: 75.000 USD, Cellphonecases.com: 75.000 USD, Wolfgangs.com: 50.000 USD, Pay.co: 46.000 USD, Pastor.com: 45.000 USD, iSugar.com: 45.000 USD, Assurance.org (insurance in French): 22.000 USD.

Performance in January: 1.29%
One of the best January performances we had so far, usually January has less earnings than December and therefore performance usually declines in the first month of the year, but this year´s January was strong and it looks like revenues from parked domains are generally up. Also Google announced important improvements for their advertising network that will increase revenues on parked pages especially if accessed from mobiles devices significantly.

What are we working on right now?
We had a very busy 2013 so far. We are about to seriously increase the AUM in the next months, we cannot say much more than this right now, but we will keep you informed – watch out for some big news (!). On a technical level we are currently working on increasing our parking revenues, from January to February we had an increase of 40% in parking revenues, we are doing this by optimizing our domains, purchasing traffic names, mass registrations of domains with traffic and dropcatching domains that are currently running out and become unregistered. Most of these projects are in cooperation with Domainindex.com the leader in domain name data mining. Our goal is to keep this strategy going over the year and to triple the parking revenues relative to the assets until the end of year with a target of 20% net performance for the Fund for 2013.

Opportunity for US Investors coming soon
We are working on a way to bring US investors on board with DDF, currently US Investors are not allowed to the fund. if you are based in the US and interested in an investment to DDF, let us know.

Domain Developers Fund Investors Report – January 2013

The market in 2012
Its been a good year for Domains allover, parking was strong and stable, developed domains did well and increased in income. Looking at the top list of deals, more sellers and buyers seem to be deciding not to publish deals anymore. Judging from the amount of smaller deals the market is strong and stable – especially with substantial increases in buy-now deals at Afternic and Sedo. Here is the list of the top (published) sales of 2012: Investing.com at 2.5 Mio USD, Personalloand.com at 1 mio. USD, Silver.com at 875.000 USD, FreeWebsite.com at 500.000 USD, Webhosting.co.uk at 500.000 USD, Challenge.com at 500.000 USD, Jackpot.com at 500.000 USD, Giftbasket at 350.000 USD and VI.com and BJ.com each at 325.000 USD. In addition to this I must say I know of about at least 10 more that would be in this list but are all under NDA now.

Performance in 2012: 12.97%, December: 2,56%
We close the year with a 12.97% net performance, having had a good December with 2.56% net. Parking revenues from our traffic portfolios drove performance, what we missed this year have been the bigger deals and sales, part of it because less buyers have been on the market, part of it also because we declined many offers because we are confident that the market will be stronger this year once the first nTLD´s are released and we can get much higher prices in the near future.

The Year 2013
We expect a very interesting year 2013, we will see the first new TLDs launched in 2013, this is definitely the most important single event in domain names to expect in 2013. While DDF is not invested in any of the companies running new TLDs, DDF has a clear strategy in place for registrations in new TLDs. As outlined earlier we do not expect that new TLD´s will impact the value of .com, .net, .org and ccTLDs, however we believe that they will become an alternative in some areas of the domain market. We also expect many investors to jump into the market next year. There is a lot of interest in all type of domain based business from institutional investors, this development has likely been triggered by new TLD´s that have brought so much attention to domains to the mainstream media recently.
Concerning our strategy, we will increase investment in traffic domains over the next months, these have been driving our performance in the last months and they are only a small part of about 20% of the total portfolio. We plan to increase this to up to 35% of the invested funds and increase the performance by up to 5% with this measure only.

More Funds invest in DDF
We welcome 2 more Funds as investors to DDF: Alternative Global Diversifed Fund, managed by Silver Lining Investment Management is a diversified fund of “alternative” investments (www.silverliningim.com), the other Fund is an institutional Fund based in Liechtenstein with a mixed strategy, both Funds also intend to increase their investments over the next months.

The market in October
So far the year has seen some great sales especially in the non-.com space again and even in .xxx, remarkable sales have been: Webhosting.co.uk 500.000 USD, online-casino.de at 144.000 USD, Toys.xxx at 125.000 USD; cheapcruises.co.uk 77.500 USD, Gruppenreisen.de 75.000 USD. The .com space is more calm (at least in the Mio. USD area) because some owners do not want to offer any names before the launch of the nTLDs, interesting sales are: Challenge.com 500.000 USD, Jackpot.com 500.000 USD, Freewebsite.com 500.000 USD, FreeSexCams.com 150.000 USD, Metal.com 140.000 USD, Designers.com 118.000 USD, Indi.com 115.000 USD and Paddle.com at 120.000 USD and a great IDN as well: 動画.com (means “video” in Japanese) at 35.000 USD.

DDF acquires Audit.com and Audits.com
As a new addition to the DDF prime names we have acquired Audit.com and Audits.com. We will not reveal the purchase price to the public. DDF will develop them as one site, off course related to auditing, but details will be revealed only in a couple of months. Besides development we plan to partner with companies in the auditing field.

Performance in September: 2.32% and YTD 9.22% with October, November and December to go.,
Monthly revenue was 2.32 % in September, Performance in the last 12 months was 15.44 % and year to date was 9.22% with another 3 usually strong months to go. Assets under Management are also up 10% in the last 2 months and we are negotiating with more prospective investors than ever before, many funds and family offices among them.

Develop, launch, develop, launch
DDF stands for Domain Developers and so we do: this week alone we soft-launched 2 new sites, and we have 6 more to come very soon:Exhibitions.com, a directory for international exhibitions, from wherever you are check which exhibitions are currently running, buy tickets, book hotels and flights as well. We currently have 5.000 exhibitions in our database and expect to grow the database to more than 100.000 within the next weeks. Another launch is Rebuildthis.com, a high performance mass-website building system for domainers, we use the system for DDF to rebuild websites that have been deployed earlier on domains and we rent the system out to other domainers as well. The system is aimed at owners of large domain portfolios.

Want to know more about the state of the Internet ?

So far the year has seen some great sales especially in the non-.com space again and even in .xxx, remarkable sales have been: online-casino.de at 144.000 USD, Toys.xxx at 125.000 USD; cheapcruises.co.uk 77.500 USD, Gruppenreisen.de 75.000 USD.
Performance in the last 12 months: 14.27 %
Monthly revenue was 0.15% in August, with July and August traditionally the weakest month in parking and advertising revenues. September until January are usually the strongest months and we expect a year-end performance to settle around 15%.

Domain Developers Fund Investors Report – July 2012

The Market in June
What we currently see is a strong buyers-market, but what we also see are less great domains coming to the market or at least their sales are not reported (we know of at least 2 7-figure sales under NDA from just the last 2 months). So there are more sales of lower quality names, however the prices paid are great. Some of the most remarkable sales have been: Cricketscore.com at 118.000 USD, Mizu, com at 90.000 USD, Electriccompany.com at 85.000 USD and Circumcision.com at 45.000 USD. A remarkable sale in the ccTLD space is Finance.co.za (South Africa) at 70.000 USD which also makes us happy because we own 18 prime .co.za domains such as houses.co.za, shops.co.za and banks.co.za.

Performance in June: 2.29 %
June was a great month with strong revenue for the DDF, we expect to increase revenue from developed sites substantially in the next months and our target remains 15% performance over the year.

Portugal.net launched
In an ongoing joint venture with Senza Limiti the DDF launched Portugal.net. Another geo-directory among Holland.net, Belgium.net, Spain.net and Madrid.net. Portugal.net is a directory with about one million pages about businesses in Portugal. Next to launch are Portugal.net, Turkey.net and Egypt.net.

DDF initiates new internal research project
We have launched an internal research project to classify and discover domain names according to their sound, The current approach to determine the value of domain names are usually the length, the letters used, their placements of letters within the word and off course the amount of searches on Google, Bing and Yahoo for the word. However in a world where branding becomes more difficult because all the great .com names are gone new ventures simply look for great sounding phantasy names. And this is exactly what we do, by using special software that can determine the sound of words we are analyzing hundreds of millions of names and register the ones still available with the best sound. If you are working in the domain industry and you are interested in this project, let us know, we are interested in partnering up with you.

DDF´s approach to new TLD´s
By definition the DDF cannot be part of any of the startups handling new registrations because the DDF´s investment strategy is to invest in great domain names and this is what we will continue to do. At the ICANN meeting in Prague I had a chat with domain-expert and nTLD investor Frank Schiling, I asked him how he looks at his collection of nTLDs and tells me: holistic. So this is also the way we look at them, As most of you know we are not very optimistic about nTLDs, however there will be successful ones and given the amount of generic extensions to come up (probably more than 400) there will be some great names among them. We will not concentrate on one or few of the nTLDs but take a holistic approach and find the best ones among all of them. What we have done so far is to compile a list of 8.5 Mio. new TLD domain names and analyzed their value in an automated way. Next we are going to manually scan the list and choose the best among them. The plan is to register great names in many of the extensions because we think that users will also take a hollistic view of the nTLDs. One of the reasons why we believe that the nTLD´s will be approached as a new set of domains is that the space for marketing is limited on registrars websites and we expect registrars to offer users a choice of domains that fit the topic the user requests and so much a particular extension, To better understand the point have a look at this funny video.

DDF availability at banks and brokers
If you are subscribing to the DDF via your bank or broker and need assistance please let us know. Most major banks accept subscriptions to the DDF, such as UBS, Credit Suisse, Barclays or Citigroup.
Banks such as HSBC and some brokers do not take orders for the DDF but we can be of assistance to help you with your subscription.

Visit us at the Domainvermarkterforum meeting in Dusseldorf
We will be at the Domainvermarkterforum in Duesseldorf on September 6 and 7, if you would like to meet up with us just reply to this email and we will get in touch with you.

Domain Developers Fund Investors Report – May 2012

The Market
Sedo, the worlds largest domain broker, reports a very strong quarter with 19.6 Mio.USD in sales and the market is strong allover with the Domainindex big TLD Index containing the biggest 9 TLD´s is up 5.5% in the month of April. This shows not only that the domain market is strong but also that its the top domains in the best TLDs that are moving up, the Global Domain Index (also provided by domainindex.com) based on all domain names was only up 1% in the same period. Largest reported sale was Personalloans.com at 1Mio USD, Jackpot.com at 500.000 USD, other remarkable sales are Saturn.pl at 190.000 USD, Flights.ca at 120.000 USD and App.me at 50.000 USD.

Performance back in March: 1.51 %
February traditionally is the slowest month in advertising and this can be felt immediatly in our traffic portfolio, the revenue was back in March and so was the performance with a plus of 1,51% for the month. We expect a great April as well, especially driven by sales. For the year our goal is still set at 15% performance.

DDF ranked #1 alternative fund at Barclayhedge
Barclayhedge, one of the worlds leading alternative investment Database lists the Domain Developers Fund now as the #1 Fund in the miscellaneous hedge funds section for 2011, outperforming all other uncorrelated products in this category with an annual performance of 16.37 % in the NAV. This is the first time the DDF has been ranked by a third party agency and immediatly we made it to the first place for our first full year of operations.

The new Swords.com and Books.so is life
We have partnered with developers to redeploy the new swords.com and its live now, so if you ever wanted to purchase a sword, this is the place to go, also do not forget to visit other sites we run such as the new spain.net, madrid.net, species.com and recently launched books.so, an experimental site deployed on a 10 USD domain from Somalia.

TLD strategy
WIth the new TLD´s coming up at the end of the year we will shift even more into the premium ,com and ccTLD (country code domains), still keeping away from smaller generic extensions such as .biz,.info,.tel,.mobi (we dont have any of these) and also moving more into the larger premium domain space.

CAYMAN ISLANDS–(EON: Enhanced Online News)–The Domain Developers Fund, a public open fund investing in internet domain names only, today announced an annual performance of 16.37 % in the NAV of the fund, compared to a projected target increase of 15% for FY 2011. Sales have increase 240% compared with 2010 and the AUM has doubled during 2011.

During the fiscal year 2011, the Domain Developers Fund made some major transactions including the acquisitions of Swords.com, Exhibitions.com, Holland.net and Belgium.net along with the sale of Howareyou.com, cars.net and many others. The domain industry as a whole saw an increase of 11% in value based on Domainindex.com for .COM domains.

Revenues from parked domains have been stable and sales have been increasing over the year with no signs of a weak economy in the domain industry. The fund manages 5000 valuable domains and many more traffic generating domains, about 200 domains have been build out to projects, such as Holland.net, Belgium.net, species.com and swords.com. The fund operates its own SEO and Programming teams and technology expects the AUM to double again in 2012.

“The performance and the increase in the assets under management show that our plan of introducing Internet domain names as a new asset class is a working concept and that people are interested in the idea of investing in domain names in the same manner they invest in real estate,” Marcovici noted.

Barclayhedge, one of the worlds leading alternative investment Database lists the Domain Developers Fund now as the #1 Fund in the miscellaneous Hedge Funds section for 2011, outperforming all other uncorrelated products in this category.

The Domain Developers Fund’s management anticipates that next annual earnings will be stronger due to increased efforts in developing high end domains. Domain Developers Fund continues to expect a performance of 15% for 2012´.

The Market report and how it affects one of our recent aquisitions!
Perhaps the most remarkable transaction in the last month was privatejet.com. This premium domain name has been aquired by Nations Luxury Transportation LLC. for 30 Million USD in cash and stocks and to our knowledge this is highest ever price paid for a pure domain name. The good news for DDF is that we just recently aquired privatjets.de (at a fraction of the price) and such deals usually drive the value of the keyword in all TLD´s up – the full story is here. Other remarkable sales have been personalloans.com at 1 Mio. USD, BowlingBalls.com at 225.000 USD, diy.org at 60.000 USD and Lotto.net at 43.000 USD.

Exhibitions.com
One of our most recent aquisitions is exhibitions.com. 2.2 Million people search for this keyword each month on Google and our plan is to develop the name into a portal to find exhibitions and events by city, date and topics etc. We have already started working on the site but do not expect it to be online before the summer.

Strong performance: 16.37 % in for 2011
When we planned the year our goal was to reach 15% of net revenue for our investors and we are pleased to report that we produced a stronger performance of 16.37% over the year. We expect to make the same kind of returns in 2012 especially since most developments have just started recently and have not produced revenue so far but are still building up traffic. We are working hard on promoting and marketing the sites.

Missed us at NOAH in London? Have a look at the video
We were invited to present the DDF at NOAH 2011 in front of 1000 delegates in London. If you missed our presentation, here is a video of our director Michael Marcovici.

Domain Developers Fund Investors Report – January 2012

The Market report and how to make money with the only possible buyer
Mostremarkable sale of the month was definitely dudu.com, a domain brokered by sedo. The chinese owner sold it to the Dubai based (and obviously well funded) social network godudu.com, that decided to switch to the shorter dudu.com name. The price was one million Dollar, a very high price for such a name but fair enough to improve the brand of such a large social portal. Congratulations.

swords.com
DDF just aquired swords.com before the end of the year. Swords.com is not only a niche category domain but also a website that already produces revenues and we expect to grow the site substantially over the next months. The current site is still the old shop and we expect to have the new version online by may 2012.

Strong performance: 3.3 % in November
November was one of our best months ever, the main reasons have been our second biggest sale of the year, howareyou.com (price is under NDA), other smaller sales, advertising and parking revenues as well as evaluations. We already have an approximate result for December which was not so strong and we expect to close the year at arround 15% performance for the year. Investors should consider that we are still building up our portfolio and that we expect to generate increasing revenues from domain sales in the near future.

Buying domains
One way to purchase domains by the DDF is to buy them from the so called “drops”. Every day about 100.000 domains become available again after ther registration has not been renewed. Most of these names don´t have much value but some do have substantial value and in this case domainers filter the lists of droping names and auction the names of, the winner of the auction has the right to reregister the name the second it becomes available. Recently aquired names of the DDF from the drops are: morethanmoney.com, creativitylab.com, coaltrade.com and many more all for under or around 1000 USD.

Visit us at Domainfest in St.Monica from January 29 to February 2nd and in NY from January 25 to 29
Domainfest has become the biggest domainer event currently, more then 800 guest are expected for this networking and conferencing event. If you want to meet up with us in St. Monica let us know as soon as possible, we will be there. We will also be in New York from January 25 to January 29 if you want to meet with us and discuss investments or domain related issues.

Domain Developers Fund – Investors Report – December 2011

The Market report an what really drives the market
Of course all domainers love to report the million-dollar deals and talk about them, however, the domain market does not depend on them, they occur only rarely, in fact most domains that are sold in the day-to-day business are in a different price range, here are some examples just from last week:
makassar.com 40.000 USD, ibud.com 25.000 USD, wjm.com at 10.000 USD, parkhere.com at 8825 USD, tomatoworld.com 6400 USD, oopstv.com 5400 usd and urbanharvest.com at 5000 USD.

Spain.net and Madrid.net
With Spain.net and Madrid.net we are launching 2 more of our Geo-sites, both are now online, while the database needs some more time to build up, the basic site can be seen already.

Strong performance: 2.7% in October
October has been one of the strongest month in this year with 2.7% increase and traditionally November and December are even stronger due to the holiday season and the increased spending in online advertising. We are currently working on the NAV for November which we hope to release soon and expect an even bigger increase in value.

Microsoft releases Domain study showing the importance of domain names
Not really news to domainers, but a great piece of research from Microsoft on the importance of domains, I just want to point out a few of the sentences in the study: “It should not be surprising that users have learned to trust some domains over others. ” and ”What is surprising is that users click on results from rep-utable domains even when more relevant search results are available.” The original paper can be found here.

Visit us at Domainfest in St.Monica from January 29 to February 2nd
Domainfest has become the biggest domainer event currently, more then 800 guest are expected for this networking and conferencing event. If you want to meet up with us in St. Monica let us know as soon as possible, we wil be there.

Domain Developers Fund – Investors Report – November 2011

Southafrican and Australian domains
Safe to say that ccTLDs are becoming more and more attractive and can be found more often in the charts these days, recent sales in ccTLDs have been: Investmentproperty.com.au for 127.000 USD, Onlinecasino.co at 100.000 USD, Frage.de (means question) at 48.000 USD and Bridge.co.zo (south africa) at 17.500 USD.

Belgium.net
Last month we launched another of our geo-domains and belgium.net is online now, holland.net that was launched 3 months ago and is allready profitable and growing very fast, more geo names to be developed soon by the DDF are spain.net, madrid.net, england.net, turkey.net, portugal.net, egypt.net and we are planning more.

Howareyou.com
2 months ago DDF negotiated a sale of howareyou.com to Cambridge National Healthcare, the deal is not yet completed (and therefore not reflected in out NAV yet) and the domain still in our name, however the propective new owners have allready won a web-competition, the link is here

High season for advertising in November and December
We are late with this month Newsletter, Performance in September was 0.7% and for October we have an expected performance of up to 2%. We expect a very good final result for the month of October. With the high season in online advertising coming up in November and December we also expect revenues from parking and developments to increase substantially.

Transparent status in Austria
For our current and prospective investors in Austria: the DDF is now tax-transparent which faciliates tax handling of the DDF for investors located in Austria, the status can be checked here. We will also obtain transparent status for Germany soon.

Waxworm tacos on species.com
We have started to develop one of our prime names: species.com as a blog. Have a look at the site and read todays post on insects as the new fancy food here.

Domain Developers Fund – Investors Report – October 2011

Realestate.com sells for 8.25 Million USD, Stepout.com for 30.000 USD (!?)
Besides large deals such as Realestate.com at 8.25 Mio. USD (including a developed site), let me give you some ideas of the more day-to-day business happening in the domain market, while large sales in the millions only happen every few weeks, these are some of the deals that happen day to day: 3gstore.com 180.000 USD, Breakdowncover.com 25.000 USD, Silvercoins.com 100.000 USD, Kurdistan.net 10.000 USD (this was our name), Comesee.com 20.000 USD, Stepout.com 30.000 USD, Kari.com 63.000 USD and novvi.com for 22.000 USD.

Great aquisitions in the co.uk landrush, and DDF in the Financial Times
DDF has been well prepared for this not to well promoted landrush of one and two letter domains in the co.uk. extension. Among others, DDF has aquired, pr.co.uk, md.co.uk, ip.co.uk, do.co.uk, in.co.uk and f.co.uk making the DDF one of the biggest buyers in the landrush. The Financial Times reported our purchase of pr.co.uk in this article, also mentioning our estimate of the domain market value.

First big sale in the .XXX TLD
.XXX is often regarded as a test run for the new TLDs, its not part of the nTLD program, however its a generic extension and it comes just shortly before the launch of the nTLD program next year, which will enable hundreds of generic domain extensions. With a sales tag of 500.000 USD for gay.xxx it looks as if there is real interest from the industry in new extensions combined with the right Keywords.

Performance +17.24 % in 12 months
August was one of our rare negative months with a 0.15% decrease in value mainly attributed to the automated evaluation of many domains and lower search in the months of August. Despite lower evaluation of many domains in August we expect valuations to come back in September, revenues from parking have been stable and revenues from developed pages have increased.

Visit us at NOAH in London from November 9 and 10
NOAH has become one of the top events in Europe where investors and entrepreneurs in the IT sector meet. There will be a presentation of the Domain Developers Fund on November 9, do not miss it.

Domain Developers Fund – Investors Report – September 2011

State of the Domain space: 215 Mio domains registered, up 8.6% from last year, total value appraised at 12 Billions
Despite the weak economy, registrations of domains are soaring, 215 Mio domains are currently registered, almost 100 Mio. in .com alone. According to ICANNs former chairman Peter Dengate Thrush the domainspace is worth 12 Billion USD, not accounting the value of names but only the value of domain renewal fees (about 3 Billion USD/year). Including the secondary market and the pure domain-traffic-value we estimate the market to have a value well above 25 Billions with a growth rate of 10% per year.

Market News: Beds.co.uk, .NBB.com…
More country domain sales this in the last weeks, Beds.co.uk sells for 130.000 USD; Business.co (Colombia) 80.000 USD, T.ag (Antigua & Barbuda) 60.000 USD, other remarkable sales in .com are social.com at 2,6 mio.USD and NBB.com at 95.000 USD.

More Domain sales…
Many smaller sales in July have contributed to the DDF performance, a larger sale has been signed in the month of August but the actual sale and payment will only happen in December and will contribute substantially to our performance.

Performance +17.42 % in 12 months
Again July has been a strong month with 0.95% increase in value, and we are meeting our targets between 15 and 20% annual performance. Income is mainly coming from parking but revenue from sales and developed projects are increasing.

Among many sales of the DDF in June and July, especially .in´s (Indi), the DDF took the first place in this years .net sales a domain sold by us at 170.000 USD after puchasing only 2 months earlier for 40% less. There is more to read about this deal in the dnjournal.com

Performance +16.46 % in 12 months

Showcases
We had many requests in the past to publish domains that we own. We cannot publish a complete list of our assets but in order to give investors an impression of our level of evaluation we have a showcase of domains online together with the appraised value on the DDF website here

Interview at Opalesque
Opalesque research has conducted a interview with the Director of the DDF, Michael Marcovici, you can download the Interview (pdf) here

Our opinion on the new TLDs

We have received a lot of calls and e-mails on the topic of the new TLDs today so let me give you our opinion on the impact that new TLDs will have on domain names in the future:

here is the short answer:

A prime location on 5th Avenue will not get any cheaper because there are now 200 more flats somewhere in Knoxville. And should Knoxville become extremely popular over time its real estate prices will raise as well.

and this is the long version:

THE FACTS
First I want to clarify some facts that have not been represented clearly in the media or at least are unclear to the general public. The new extensions cannot be registered like domains, there is a procedure that enables interested parties to apply for such an extension and it does involve besides knowledge financing as well. The application for a new TLD costs US$185,000 if you are the only applicant, if not the application will be auctioned off among the interested parties. Besides this fee (auditing, consulting and legal costs) applicants must provide the technical infrastructure to run the TLD, ranging somewhere from US$ 100.000 to US$ 500,000 plus marketing costs. Marketing a TLD successfully like “.co” recently did, can cost several millions of dollars.
Another thing I want to point out is that the first new TLD will not be life untill early 2014 and that there might be many more obstacles on the way because the United States government among others are not happy with ICANN’s plans.

WHO NEEDS NEW TLDs ?
One group that should be attracted to the new TLDs are large brands, some of them have already expressed interest such as nikon and sony, they want their .sony and .nikon. Another group that is addressed are countries with non-latin letters, they can now apply for extensions in Arabic Chinese Hebrew etc. The third big group are generic extensions such as .free, .cars, .sports etc.
The organization with the biggest interest in new TLDs is ICANN itself as this will produce millions in revenues year-by-year.

WHERE WE SEE THE TROUBLES
1) All of the large companies that might be interested in their own extension are in posession off their.com company name domain name. I don’t think it is a smart move to give up or weaken these domains that are around for decades and have millions of backlinks making them rank perfectly in search engines.
2) I honestly believe the a dot-company name extension weakens the branding because it’s unclear what words would be on the left of the dot, like news.apple or home.apple, that does not look good and creates even more confusion. The nTLD will not work without anything in front of the dot.
3) As appealing as the new extension might appear the overall trouble for trademark holders will probably be big as the issue of defensive registrations in all the new TLDs (should this become a success) might be a very expensive experience. At 1000 new TLDs every year even registering only 50 in each of the TLDs to prevent cyber squatting would amount to millions each year.
4) nTLDs will probably not help to resolve the issue of cyber squatting, if it would only be about the extension you could always look up another strange extension that has only few registrations and see if your name is available or cheap to buy. In the more succesfull nTLDs the good names will be registered early on and will have to be purchased.
5) Another downside I see is that choosing a particular generic extension might limit you in your company strategy, say you choose company.news today, work with it some years but later shift into a similliar business such as consulting you have a problem.
6) Many special TLDs have been launched in the last 10 years, most of them are a failure such as .coop, .museum,.aero and so on, most of these TLDs are 80% behind their projected numbers after many years of operation.

WHAT ARE THE SCENARIOS FOR THE DDF ?
1) The nTLD program becomes a huge success and many of the new extensions receive a lot of registrations and great developments, in this case we will continue our business of registering, buying and monetizing these new names together with the great names we allready have in other extensions. The DDF is already in touch with several promoters of new TLDs and we will evaluate opportunities in the nTLD space.

2) The nTLD programm will be a success for only very few new extensions that will be marketed professionally like we have seen it for “.co” recently. In this case, again domainers will be the first ones to join the landrushes and we will have more opportunities to invest in domains.

3) There is only little interest in new TLDs, after some initial launches the market cools down, in this case we will stay away from nTLDs.

4) even worse, if ICANN has overseen serious concerns of governments, law enforcement and so on, the nTDLs could even mean the end of ICANN and a transition of the control of the Domain space to the UN or the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and probably also the end of the nTLD program.

WHAT DO WE EXPECT ?
We expect a medium success, there is definitely place for great extensions, there is demand for domains and anyone that has the ability and financials to launch a great new extension will be succesfull, but we do not expect many extensions to make it to serious amount of registrations.
And as already mentioned in the beginning, we definitely do not expect any decrease in value for the big 3 (.com,.net,.org) or any of the larger and locally used ccTLDs.

Market News, Domainname.com, Runningshoes.com…
Many more deals in the market these days, in .com this years list is led by Domainname.com for 1 Mio USD, Runningshoes.com for 700.000 USD, Puzzle.com for 500.000 USD, other interesting sales are 33.com at 358.000 USD which went to a buyer from China, Cupidon.com which was sold to the owners of Cupid.com for 280.000 USD.
Country Domains are getting stronger week by week.
The so called ccTLDs (country code top level domains) are developing even stronger then the overall market, recent sales in country Domains include Deals.co.au (Australia) for 100.000 USD , Business.co (Colombia, but generally used internationally), T.ag (Antigua and Barbuda) at 60.000 USD, the DDF owns a large portfolio of ccTLDs, among them some of the highest ranking Keywords in Singapore, HongKong, Peru, Pakistan, Colombia and many more countries.

Performance +18.87 % in 12 months
We aim at 20% return on a 12 month base and we are currently on the best way, our traffic portfolios generates 12% income for the fund, sales and increase in value of domains usually make another 10 to 12% but there a lots of hidden reserves, especially in the high worth names.

Belgium.net
Another launch of a geo-site of the DDF, after Holland.net we launched Belgium.net a few days ago, there is still some work to do, but we went online to get SEO going and start to receive traffic from search engines for this business and travel directory.
Next on the list are Madrid.net and England.net.

Making Money with parked pages & SEO
We experimented very succesfully with SEO (search engine optimization) on parked pages, the fund is currently developing several hundreds of these sites at our new partners site trafficz.com, you may take a look at some of these pages, clicks generate up to 70 USD each for the fund.

Domain Developers Fund – Investors Report – April 2011

Market News, t-shirts.in, BlueJeans.com,.XXX
The biggest news in the domain industry might be the approval of .XXX by ICANN as it can be seen almost as one of the new gTLD´s and it will be interesting to see how it is doing. We have not seen disclosed multimillion dollar transactions in 2011, but the market remains strong in .com as well as in country TLD´s: autoinsurance.org 440.000 USD, driven.com 225.000 USD, ts.com 186.000 USD, mind.com 171.000 USD. As one of the biggest indian (.in) portfolio holders we also like: sportsbetting.in 42.300 USD, t-shirts.co.in 36.500 USD and seo.in 18.500 USD.Performance +2.3 % in March
March has been a great month for the fund, sales, revenues and increase in value have combine to one of the biggest monthly increases with 2.3% to 281.8 (NAV value at the end of march) the fund ever had and we aim to keep or outperform the current 12 month performance of 17.5 %.

Hopeforhaitinow.org
some of you might remember the big charity telethon aired after the earthquake in Haiti, the project was the most widely distributed telethon in history and was organized CBS, MTV, George Clooney, Wyclef and Joel Gallen, the project received a lot of media attention and its website more than 150,000 backlinks. For unknown reasons the domain dropped some weeks ago and DDF was able to purchase it in a drop auction. We will continue the charity work and pass 100% of all donations to partner organizations. The DDF will make its money using the pagerank 7 to monetize the site. We encourage you all to continue the support for Haiti.

Traffic Portfolios
the DDF has acquired a substantial number of traffic domains representing currently 15% off the total assets of the fund. These domains deliver a revenue of about 6% of the total funds yearly revenues. We plan to expand investments in these fields up to 30% of the total portfolio and aim at a total of 12% revenue per year for the fund only from this segment.

Farmers and Panda updates by Google
We have received many requests connected to Google’s announcement of their algorithm updates, we can report so far that our sites have not been affected and that we do not expect further updates to impact our sites because these changes are aimed at different type of websites. Traffic domains are not affected by Google at all because their traffic comes directly from users and not from search engines.

This coming thursday, April 21, visit us – if you are in Vienna, Austria
We will hold a presentation and discussion about the fund and domains at the office of our sales and marketing partner organization
GBR, Boersegasse 12, 1010 Vienna, starting at 5 p.m. and you are warmly welcome!

Cars.net
another great domain the DDF´s portfolio. DDF has aquired cars.net at a very good price in the last days and we have great plans with this domain. The keyword “cars” is probably among the top 5 of the worlds most sought-after keywords on the web and is searched more then 600 Million times every month on the web.
Traffic Domains
Besides many great domain names the DDF has a portfolio of so called traffic domains. These names don´t look valuable in the first moment, but one like, 8229.com can bring as much as 400 USD/month due to the expired traffic it still has from an old project that used to be reachable on this domain. The traffic portfolio of the DDF has a return of 36% per year.

January Performace 2.15%
Performance was again strong in January and we expect more growth in February (will be released very soon) thru return from traffic domains, domain sales and developed projects.

DDF launches Holland.net
After 2 months of work we have launched our Holland business and travel directory for Holland, now we watch the traffic growing. Meanwhile we work at many more Geo-directories, next to be launched: belgium.net

Reuters
DDF quotes can now be retrieved via Reuters at 68081343

Market News, FB.com
The market is stronger than ever, FB.com was acquired by Facebook for $8.5 million, other remarkable transactions are ringtones.com at $750,000, homeownersinsurance.com at $570,000 as well as many country domains such as credits.fr for $850,000 and free-sms.de for $160,000. Today you can watch one of the biggest live-auction in the industry at moniker.com including great names such as girl.com, vehicles.com, rates.com, insurancequote.com, all expected to sell above 1 Mio. USD.

England.net, Belgium.net, Holland.net
Besides these three names we are continuously expanding our portfolio in geo and other industry domains in the .net as well as other TLD´s. Recent transactions of the DDF include pkw.org, lkw.net, ean.org, see.net and we are looking forward to develop many of the names into profitable websites.

Assets under Management +19.0 %
The AUM (pure inflow of money) in December and January was +19%. We have also closed agreements with leading fund distributors in Germany, Austria and Hong Kong.

DDF launches Species.com
After 2 months of work we have launched species.com as a video blog about wildlife and animals.

DDF Blütenweiss in Austria
in the next days the DDF will start to report earnings to the ÖKB in Austria and make the fund “Blütenweiss”. This measure will make tax treatment in Austria for the fund much easier for banks, institutional and private investors. We are looking forward to reach transparent tax status in Germany too.

Performance of the DDF is +31.1% over the last 12 months

A great year for the DDF so far, with more then 30% net performance, the DDF´s performance clearly outperformed most traditional funds (and most alternatives too). Besides the performance, DDF owns many hundreds of the best ccTLDs in many countries making the DDF a strategic factor in these countries cyberspace.

Assets under Management +17.7 %

After 15% plus in AUM (pure inflow of money) in october, november was an even better month with 17.7% in new assets.

DDF aquires Holland.net

Besides many new aquisitions (the fund bought and registered more then 300 domains in november), DDF aquired holland.net for 32.000 USD, like earlier with tcm.org, we will develop the domain in cooperation with Senzalimiti ltd. into a portal for travel and business in Holland.

DDF on TV

Market News

One more time, Domain Deals have been all over the news, one of the largest domain transactions ever took place 2 weeks ago, with sex.com being bought by a consortium for 13 Mio. USD. The Domain claims 15.000 visits/day and revenues are reported up to 3 Mio USD/year. Another major deal this week in the domain market was zip.com: sold for 1 Mio USD. The Domain Market is very strong and it looks like 2010 will be another record year for domain names.

Performance of the DDF is up +5.1% in October, latest quote: 277,95 USD

With advertising, parking revenues and domain values up, DDF had a +5.1% gain in October, leading to a 12 month performance of 42.47%. We expect strong growth especially in the strongest months for advertising revenues: November and December

Assets under Management +15.5%

October was a strong month in assets growth too, the total Fund Volume is up by 15% and showing the continious growth of the Fund and the business model enabling DDF to make more purchases in the domain space

DDF´s Assets undervalued by 35%

In a recent combined manual evaluation process with Monikker, Sedo and Goddady the funds total assets have been evaluated 35% higher then the actual appraisal of the funds assets by the management itself. This clearly shows the conservative appraisal policy of the DDF management.

From early on, the DDF has aquired domains in the indian and chinese domainspace, the simple background is that we expect both countries to continue to grow at high rates and sooner or later to close in on the wealth and income of europe and the US. Besides .in and .cn, the DDF holds a portfolio of premium IDN´s in .com in chinese language. We believe that a domain portfolio is the easiest most felxible and most efficient way to profit from this historic opportunity. In a great presentation at TED in india, Hans Rosling predicts when exactly (in his opinion) both countries average income per capita will surpass the ones of the US. He is using his own data representation method – gapminder.com, which we use as well for our own internal economic analysis. See the video at here and make sure to check out the data tool as well.

DDF STUDY How much GDP for a Domain ?

Domains Economy Study

This is a part of a study commited by the team of the DDF on the subject of ccTLDS and the economy behind them. We have taken a very simple approach by dividing the latest available GDP, 2009 or 2008 by the latest number of registered Domains in various ccTLDs, leaving away all questions of Internet infrastructure, education etc. The number for .com include the big generic TLDs such as .com,.net,.org,.biz and .info. For some TLD´s there is no data available such as Greece, Nigeria and Thailand, but we are working on it. Please note that the numbers are in ´000

What does it show ?

If we look at the last and the first on the list, it says a lot allready, Montenegro, a very small economy marketed its TLD very succesfull and for each Domain registered there is a GDP of 16.000 USD to be distributed. Saudi Arabia, who is very restrictive in registering Domains has 24 Mio USD of GDP/Domain. It also showas that Colombia, who is next on the list has a lot of potential, not only because of the nice .co ending that they currently launch but also because there is a lot of economy/domain to share. The other intersting rankings are the .us TLD which is still waiting to be kissed awake and the usual suspects: India, Mexiko, Iran, Peru and Turkey.

The Domain Developers Fund is continiously monitoring the Developments of Domains and the economies behind them to evaluate purchases and registartions for its assets.

The outstanding performance is due to above average earnings resulting from new monetizing techniques specifically developed by the fund’s management. We are particularly happy to demonstrate such a result in our first year of business. The strongest months have been the starting months, as well as due to lower investment levels and therefore easier earnings in percentages vs. absolute numbers. However, our second strongest period has been December 2009 which is a clear indication that our methodology works with higher investments as well and demonstrates further how scalable our business is.
